PROJECTS / RPC bpi Protec

RPC bpi group is a place for vision. It is a vision that dates back many years to bpi’s founding Father, David Scott. The Groups first record is as a flax-warping business in Dundee during 1797.
Fast forward a few generations and technology was dictating a faster, more furious pace thanks to steam power. The company was quick to adapt, trading with businesses as far away as Brazil.
By the First World War the company, now called James Scott and Sons, had taken up electric power for the mass production of jute sandbags and soon had operations in New York and Calcutta.
The 1940s saw the company step up a gear through acquisitions and before long the visionary minds were coming to terms with polythene, eclipsing jute as a preferred packaging material.
By the 1990s the group was making its mark on food, beverage, industrial and medical markets, as flexible packaging became a mainstream material.
The group changed its name to British Polythene Industries in 1990, while a flurry of activity in 2016 was crowned by British Polythene Industries PLC becoming part of RPC Group Plc.

Quantum2 were approached and tasked to design and fit this 4,000 sq.ft workplace in Wirral, Merseyside.

The design phase of this project took careful planning in the Quantum2 Mersey design studio. The RPC offices were built in the 1970's and so were cellular - staff would see each other in passing only in corridors or at meetings... the Managing Director was keen to change this culture with an open plan office and embrace the collaborative, modern ways of working.  Project team leaders along with the RPC Directors were determined to make best use of this space.

First up - was to give visitors and staff a more welcoming reception area. We replaced the old seating with an L Shaped sofa (Erno by Sixteen3) finished in Agua Paint Pot & Taurus vinyl fabric, in corporate brand colours orange/grey. We replaced old, tired looking beech furniture with white reception desk and accompanying storage.

RPC's production staff work closely with the office personnel - therefore there is heavy foot traffic from plant to the offices frequently throughout the working day. Quantum2 specified a performance barrier system with the carpet tiles - creating a walkway within the newly created open plan office.. capturing dirt from boots and giving longevity to the floor. Around this we matched colours from the walkway and began to introduce RPC's orange brand colours firstly with a subtle border to the barrier system, then finally with random pattern accent tiles surrounded with a 'domestic feel' loop tile from the Burmatex Alaska range.

With regards to office furniture used in this new office, it was important for Quantum2 to match the brief from the RPC team. Bench desks were specified to improve communication within the departments of sales, marketing and production - we knew it was vitally important to specify a robust yet stylish range that will never go out of fashion. A clean and crisp white finish was decided - we recommended and installed the beautiful, fully cable managed A-Frame from Claremont with white edged desk screens finished in Camira fabric. For the management team, who now have 3 individual glazed celluar offices, single A-Frame white desks 1800mm wide give plenty of room for working while keeping consistent with the overall design of the office.

Our next assignment was to find a task chair that was a 'one chair fits all' solution. The Quantum2 showroom became the setting for a decision making process that resulted in the fully ergonomic F94 task chair from Hood Seating being the winner. With intuitive 3 button technology to control seat height, depth and tilt positions - finished with a contoured mesh back and waterfall fabric seat for comfort to come as standard.

The conference room needed to house a 70 inch LED TV to allow for better presentations - Quantum2 specified a bespoke media wall with surrounding storage. This allowed us to bring further splashes of colour from the RPC brand palette on the back panel.

RPC bpi Protec produce environmentally friendly products using a closed loop process. Quantum2 designed a 'Green Zone' - themed within the carpet tiles, soft seating and digital wallpaper which. This area is situated in a welcoming position by the entrance to the open plan office - providing an informal meeting space for visitors and staff alike!

Lastly, Quantum2 designed and installed a work kitchen cafe - providing a plumbed in sink within oak effect worktops and integrated fridge. We specified and supplied Bjorn stools in Camira Rivet fabric with oak legs. For the flooring, we designed and fitted LVT from the Amtico Signature range in a Parquet pattern. To finish off the area Quantum2 wanted to give a more homely feel so covered the walls with an abstract design wallpaper.

This project was completed on time and within the client's budget!
